In simple terms, Anxiety is your body’s natural response to stress. It’s a feeling of fear or apprehension about what’s to come. Anxiety can be a beneficial emotion essential for our survival, as it provides us with information on what is safe and what poses a threat. While experiencing anxiety is normal in certain situations, it becomes problematic when it begins to interfere with daily functioning, often leading to a diagnosis of anxiety disorder.

But if your feelings of anxiety are extreme, last for at least 6 months, and are interfering with your life, you may have an anxiety disorder. Because anxiety is more than just a feeling of nervousness or worry; it fundamentally changes the way you perceive and interact with the world. When people feel anxious, their brain activates a series of hormonal and neuronal pathways to prepare them for action. For those of us who experience it, anxiety can transform everyday situations into overwhelming challenges, distorting reality and affecting thoughts, behaviors, and emotions in profound ways.

How many people have been found to suffer from anxiety disorder? Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illnesses in the U.S. and affect over 40 million adults, or 19.1% of the population. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is the most common anxiety disorder in the U.S. with 6.8 million adults affected. 1 Young people are more likely to experience symptoms of anxiety than older adults, with nearly 50% of those between the ages of 18 and 24 reporting depressive disorder or anxiety symptoms. Women are more than twice as likely than men to experience an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are often very treatable, but more than 60% of people do not seek treatment for it.

Anxiety disorders interfere with daily activities and can impair a person’s family, social, school, or working life. In my next blog post, I will explore how anxiety alters perception and influences various aspects of life, backed by scientific studies.
